First State Manufactured Housing Association Scholarship

Manufactured Home Resident Scholarship:
Four (4) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors, GED recipients, or students who are currently enrolled in college, technical schools or trade schools.  Full or part time registration in an accredited program is acceptable.  Award recipients may reapply annually.  Eligible participants must live in a modular or manufactured home in Delaware for at least one year prior to the application.
Manufactured Home Resident Scholarship:
This completed application must be accompanied by an original type-written 300-word essay explaining the impact of factory-built housing on your life, career goals and why you feel you are deserving of a scholarship, a copy of your high school, GED, or college transcript, and three letters of reference from business persons, clergy, or community leaders.  Only one of these may be from a school administrator or teacher.  You may copy the included sheet for your letters of reference OR attach your individually typed letters of reference.  In order to be considered, the completed application, with essay and reference, must be postmarked to FSMHA.
Award Selection:
Selection is based on the essay response, scholastic grades, community involvement, honors recommendations, and personal goals.  Judges’ decision is final.  Alternates will be selected and move to first place should a winner be disqualified, receive a full scholarship from another source, or decide not to further his/her education.  Recipients and those who are not chosen for this scholarship will be notified via mail in April.

Application Deadline: must be postmarked or received by Friday, March 25th!

A lot of people see a dead or dying tree and see something that should be removed from the landscape immediately.  I am one of those people, except when that tree is growing in an area that allows it to provide longer lasting benefits for wildlife habitat.  Trees located in woods, forests, buffer strips or wetlands are all ideal candidates to become a snag, or "wildlife tree."  A snag is a dead or dying tree that can support more life than a living tree!  It is true.  It really does not vary species to species, dead trees provide benefits. Some species have stronger deadwood though, like our native Eastern Redcedar, Juniperus virginiana.

Obviously, this happens all the time in nature, but in or on managed land, the term for a dead or dying tree that is left to stand is called a snag.  If a snag was left to stand and it eventually fails and falls to the ground, or larger parts of a dead tree are removed and placed on the ground, they are called logs.  If a standing dead or dying tree has a target (people or property that could be injured/damaged), sometimes it is necessary to remove a part or all of the standing tree.  That is why you might see dead trees standing that look like poles that have been cut to 10’, 20’, 30’ or however tall, it is taking aparticular target out of play.

There are many benefits of leaving these snags or logs, such as providing a place to live for birds, bats, squirrels, and raccoons.  They provide a food source by attracting insects, lichens, and fungi.  You will often see larger hunting birds perched in or on top of these trees looking for food.  They provide hiding places for all sorts of insects and reptiles as well as breaking down and returning vital nutrients to the soil.

"Great place for family & kids to spend summer vacation. I truly believe spending summers and some holidays in Pot-Nets had a positive influence on my sons."

"Snow removal … it would be an understatement to say the snow removal team this year had done a great job.  This team was the most efficient group I’ve ever seen, ensuring that the roads were safely usable and clear during every phase of multiple snowstorms.  The hours they worked are to be admired and their dedication to “do the job right” is a trademark of the Tunnell organization.  They deserve a ton of respect for all their hard work.  Please Thank Them for all they did."
