Pot-Nets Communities

Pot-Nets Bayside, mid 1960's
"After Dad died in 1958, Eolyne, my wife, (pronounced E-O-LEENE as in gas-o-line) and I rented The White House for a couple of weeks. It had been left to Mr. Sam Showell, Sr. who rented the White House to people during the summertime. I was giving a lot of thought to starting a trailer park, mobile home park, manufactured home community - at Pot-Nets.

I believe it was in the Summer of Fall of 1961 that I received a phone call from Oliver Todd. He had a mobile home at White House Beach and asked if I would be interested in selling him a lot near Pot-Nets beach. I told him that I didn't want to sell lots, but if he would get 4 other friends to agree to rent lots we would start a mobile home park. He and his friends would receive lifetime leases at $100 per year. It wasn't long before he called back to say "I have my 4 friends and we agree". That is when I decided to begin developing Pot-Nets.

I went to Jay Wingate, an engineer/surveyor in Rehoboth Beach to design the layout of Pot-Nets. The first phase was Marina 2, Hillenwood Road, Bayberry Road, Woodcrest Road and River Road to the future Marina 1.  Melvin Joseph dug the lagoons and Marinas 1-4, by the hour. Melvin would never do work for us at a negotiated price before a job would begin. Always by the hour.

The first year we rented 14 lots. The second year we rented 21 lots. The third year we rented 38 lots. The fourth year 69 lots. And so the growth began. The communities have grown because of the enjoyable time the residents have had. The rural areas with pine and oak forests are appealing. The bay waters with fish, crabs, clams and wildlife are ideal for recreational boating, sailing and leisurely relaxation.

We hope to continue to improve the communities and make them more enjoyable and alluring to those retirees and recreational enthusiasts who enjoy this rural area in Sussex County."

- Robert W. Tunnell, Sr.
(1914-2000)

“Imagine our area without its fantastic restaurants, our local boutiques and our service businesses,” he said. “The big boxes and corporations will survive. But it’s small businesses that reflect our communities, and we can’t risk losing them. All of us need to pull together to support them now as best we can. Our focus in economic development is to attract and retain jobs. Business retention is a major part of what we do, and in light of COVID-19, we, particularly at the government level, have to do what we can to keep businesses open, to keep jobs in our community, and to keep our economy rolling. That’s the mission.”

Bill Pfaff, Director of Sussex County Economic Development

Sussex County recently entered Phase 1 of its economic recovery plan, and Phase 2 begins on June 15th.  Businesses are eager to get back to work. Buying locally can help support your local community, and help restaurants affected by COVID-19 bounce back. Learn more at the link below, or watch the video!

Unfortunately, repairs are still being made to the Lakeside Pool at this time. One of the motors needs to be replaced, which is an older model that we're having to get shipped in.  We think the Lakeside Pool will be closed for the majority of the week, with Saturday June 6th being the target reopen date. We'll make an announcement when this pool opens again.

Please be cautious around the road and site work in Bayside, just past the Main Gate and near Half Shell Pond.  Thank you for your patience while we improve this area!

Attention anglers! Fishing and crabbing season is upon us and we couldn't be more excited. According to the DNREC Delaware Fishing Report, local fishermen have had luck in the Indian River Inlet catching rockfish, shad, and bluefish.  Anglers are catching flounder in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. The most popular bait seems to be Gulp! in pink or white.

Did you have trouble getting to the Rehoboth bay at low-tide last season?  The project to dredge Massey’s Ditch, an important navigation channel in the Inland Bays, was completed on February 27, 2020. The channel was dredged to a width of 100 feet and a depth of 7.5 feet, making Massey's Ditch much easier to navigate at low tides.  Approximately 140,000 cubic yards of material was removed from the channel and adjacent areas and the material was used to restore a popular public recreational beach area.

Want to enjoy boating season but don’t own a boat? Freedom Boat Club is excited to announce the addition of 29 new boats this season, including Cypress Cay Pontoons, Sea Rays, Cobia Center and Dual Consoles, Key West Center Consoles, and Bayliner deck boats.  Our Pot Nets location will be almost doubling our fleet; growing from 6 to 11 boats!  There’s never been a better time to join and start planning your very own adventures on the water.
